Ouch!

See that pretty girl? She hurt her arm the other day.
Arm Sling

So, naturally, being the great auntie that I am, I sewed her up a sling last night. I didn't know what I was doing. I consulted my husband, cut up some fabric, and sewed her a sling. The only tricky thing is that I was sewing for a little girl who was asleep. In another house. And so since I had no measurements, I needed to make something adjustable.

If you know how to sew bags, you will probably be able to figure out my simple drawing below:

I forgot to draw the bias tape that I used to bind the cuff. If anyone is interested, I might make a tutorial in the future. There are a few things I would do a little differently if I had to make this again, but overall I am happy with it. And so is my niece. And that's really all that matters.

Sing it with me...

Oh darlin, said here I am. Come rub it 'pon me belly wit your Coconut Jelly.

Oh those aren't the words? Well you try singing Guava Jam instead of guava jelly. Doesn't work. So? Sing it with me!

Oh darlin, said here I am. Come rub it 'pon me belly wit your Coconut Jelly.

These aren't the greatest pictures. But I had a difficult time thinking of how I could get a good shot of clear jelly. Any ideas?!

You rip what you sew.

It wasn't until I sewed all the way around, save for the opening for turning, that I realized I pinned the lining in the wrong way.

Sew what you rip

Repeat after me: stuff your lining into the bag, right sides facing.

Sometimes you just gotta rip what you sew.

Art Show

There is an art show at the Art's Council Gallery up on Capitol Hill. I believe it runs through October 223rd, Mon-Fri 7:30-4:30 and Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. I don't have any pieces there this time. I feel conflicted about those art shows because I don't really consider myself an artist. . . more of a creator. What I create is for use, for consumption - not necessarily just for admiration. I create wearable art. Usable art. Edible art.

I plan on taking my daughter to the gallery this Saturday. I hope you'll go too.

Ayorátá's first contest!

Everyone loves t-shirts. For self-expression, for comfort, for laughs, for pajamas. I have lots of ideas for humorous t-shirts. But I don't have the money to print all of them. So for now, I'm enjoying my ajinoMOTO Racing shirts.

I ran into my friend Jacoby last weekend and he was wearing my shirt! Well, it's his shirt. (It was great to see you Jacoby, even if it was just for a few minutes.)

If you want to win one for yourself, enter Ayoátá's first contest! Create a link to this post and write a post about what kind of t-shirt you want to design. You don't need to have graphics to go along with it, just a cool description is enough. But if you do include graphics - awesome! (Your link should show up attached to this post. If it doesn't, send me a link to your post in the comments.)

But wait, there's more! All posts must be written by October 20th. I will select my 5 favorite designs and post them here and ask readers to vote for their favorite. The design with the most votes will win an ajinoMOTO racing shirt. (Oh my goodness, I hope that there will be more than 5 entries - if there is an overwhelming number of entries, I will probably increase the entries to vote on from 5 to some other number.)

I hope this contest will inspire you to create. To create an idea, a design, an expression. And maybe it will inspire you to carry it out and print your own shirt.

Enter the contest, tell your friends to enter, tell your kids to enter! Create a link!
