Look what I did!

IMG_5887

I repaired the upholstery on a chair! That tear was twice as long, I was halfway through the repair job when I took the picture. I finally got to use one of those curved needles. I know right? It was awesome.

My repair job isn't amazing, but I think it's decent enough. The chair belonged to my paternal grandmother. We've had it for ages. It has been the time-out chair for about 12 years now - since my sister's oldest child was born, or rather, since he was old enough to need to go in time-out. The chair is starting to show it's age and I love it even more for that.

Deece's Drawstring Gift Bag Tutorial

An anytime drawstring / pull-to-wrap gift bag tutorial, just for you!

A few years ago, my friend Lyn described a fun little gift bag to me. And this is what I came up with - I love it! I currently use it as a gift bag, but I'd like to modify it in the future to use it as a lunch bag or a tupperware wrap. This tutorial is for personal use.

Skill level: Beginner

Materials:
-two equal size squares of fabric (outside and lining)
-coordinating thread
-two equal lengths of coordinating ribbon, just larger than the perimeter of the fabric

The squares I used in this tutorial were 9.5" each. I also sewed one of my tags onto the right side of the lining fabric. (The picture below shows two sets of fabric squares, small and large.)

Pin your squares right sides together.

Sew around the squares, but leave a gap of about three inches in the middle of one of the sides. The yellow lines that are perpendicular to the fabric indicate the gap. The other yellow lines show where you need to sew. You can use whatever seam allowance you like. I usually use a 1/2" seam allowance, but I used a narrower 3/8" seam allowance for this tutorial.

When you come to a corner, turn the wheel so your needle inserts into the fabric, lift the presser foot and turn your fabric. Then lower the presser foot and continue sewing.

This is what the top should look like when you're finished sewing around. See the unsewn gap? (I had some tension issues, but it seemed to work out.)

Then turn your bag right side out through the opening.

Some people have fancy point turners that they use to push out the corners, I use chopsticks.

Next, press your bag flat. Be sure to neatly fold in the seams of the opening.

Pin the opening closed.

Then sew around the bag as close to the edge as you can. All the way around, okay? Not just the opening.

Lay your bag down so the lining is down and the outside is facing up. Then turn one corner about an inch down and pin it in place (the main fabric turns down onto itself and now some of the lining is visible on the outside of the bag). Do this to all of the corners.

Sew along the yellow dashed line, from one perpendicular line to the other. Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end to lock the stitches in place. You definitely don't want this to come undone because this is where your drawstring will go.

I sew directly on top of the existing stitches so there is only one line of stitches. This is what one of the finished corners should look like:

Next, cut two equal lengths of ribbon that are just larger than the perimeter of the bag.

Attach a small safety pin to the end of one of the ribbons and thread it through all four corners.

Tie the two ends of the ribbon together when the ribbon comes back to its starting point. Then do the same thing with the other ribbon. Thread them so they tie on opposite sides of the bag.

To use the bag, turn it over so the lining is facing up. Place your gift in the middle of the bag. This one is the perfect size for two of my 2 oz. Island Flavor jams - reduced sugar mango jam and coconut jelly. Yum!

Hold onto the two knotted ends and pull up to close.

Then tie it into a cute little bow.

And that's it! I would love to see what fabric combinations you use and what gifts you fill them with.

Link this post on your blog for a chance to win the gift bag!
Your link should show up in the footer, but if you want to make sure I see it, leave me a comment.

You have until midnight on January 29th to enter. Why January 29th? Because that's my 5th wedding anniversary! That's January 29th, Saipan time (GMT +10). This means that all you people in the states need to link it by January 28th. On January 30, I will pick a random winner.

Welcome 2010

Life is (much more than) a balancing act, which, for me, is usually very unbalanced. I don't know how they do it. You know them? The ones whose act always seem to be together. Meals are cooked, patience is shown, kids are on track, husband is happy, crafts are made, house is neat, blog is updated. Yeah, them. And the ones who have full-time jobs on top of that? I just don't know how they do it. Maybe they just never sleep. Ever.

Welcome 2010. I hope you bring some balance. And sleep.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

"It's a word you say when you don't know what to say."

Well, I don't know what to say because I'm just so freaking happy. I sent off my first etsy order! Also? I delivered an on-island order, finished the purple project, and received another custom order.

The purple project I was working on is done and will be delivered soon. Want to see it?

Coordinating Mother-Daughter Aprons!
Coordinating aprons for mother and daughter

I had so much fun working on this order. Not just the actual cutting and sewing, but also the thought process that went into designing them - designing them to coordinate and not be exactly the same apron; and also consider factors like a little girl is constantly growing, so how do I make hers grow with her, at least for a little while. I want to make more.

I hand stitched a flower onto the upper right corner. Cute no? It isn't visible in the picture above because I thought it would be cute to hold a whisk in my hand for the picture and I didn't even consider that a thin wire whisk would be able to totally block it out of the picture.

My client is about the same size as I am and her daughter is 3 and Katelyn is 4, so it was nice to be able to do mock fittings at home.

I want to make more aprons! And I want to make dresses! And I want to make all these other things that I just don't have enough time to make. Do I sound crazy? I think I might be.

I love making things!

I just wish I had more time to make the things I love to make. But for now, the shop is stocked. Check it out!

I am working on a project that involves the color purple! More to come when I'm done.

I live for this!

I love the Brilliant Star Holiday Bazaar! This year it was held at the Palms Resort instead of the Multipurpose Center - I enjoyed it just the same, but I bet we lost out on some visitors due to the far off location.

Leila of Handmade by Leila (lovely handmade jewelry!) and Tokie Mojica of Leya's Crafts were there. So were Greg Elliot and Joe Kane and other visual artists whose names I have forgotten (I'm sorry). There were some awesome raffle prizes including PIC waterpark passes, DFS gift certificates, and one lucky winner received one of my black ajinoMOTO Racing Shirts!

I only took a few pictures (amazing!) and most of them weren't great. So this is what you get. There was pretty much non-stop entertainment all day.

There was even a belly dancer! And a magician (not pictured).

This was my jam and syrup display. There were individual jars and I put together some variety gift sets - those were gone before the morning was over. I have no more jars and no more money, so I likely won't be making any more of them before Christmas, but I do have a few 6oz jars available and a couple of syrups. I will probably list them this week.
Island Flavor Jams

See the tropical blue messenger bag on the chair in the bottom left of this photo? It's still available. I'll probably list that too. The Ha'ani Bag is sold! Thank you Suzanne, I hope you enjoy it! But the matching mini mama bag is still available. I guess I'll list that too. I'm also going to list whatever Marianas Touch ylang ylang infused body scrubs and coconut oils I still have.
2009 Bazaar Booth

So keep checking in (or even subscribe) so you know when the items are available online. (If you would like the ajinoMOTO Racing shirts, send me an email and I'll let you know how to get them.)

Great Holiday Gifts!

The Holiday Bazaar is this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Palms Resort. There will be local crafters and artists selling great holiday gifts. I'll be there too!

I'll have jams and syrups....

2009 Island Flavor Gift Set

some t-shirts and a few bags....and some jams...

Island Flavor 1.25 oz Gift Set

I'll have soaps and ylang ylang infused coconut oil and body scrubs...and some jams...

Island Flavor 6oz Jams

Please come out and support our local crafters and artists; there will also be entertainment and raffle drawings throughout the day.

If you are looking for gifts for family, friends, or co-workers, the Holiday Bazaar is a great way to kick off your holiday shopping. Are you sending gifts off-island? Ayorátá Island Flavor jams and syrups and Ayorátá Marianas Touch bath and body are great ways to share a piece of Saipan with loved ones overseas.

(Yes, the shrinkwrap takes away from the jams just a little, but it shows you that that safety is important to me.)

Ha'ani Bag

I asked my sister to buy me some fabric when she and her family went to Hawaii this past summer. She picked up four great prints for me. I immediately envisioned what I'd make from the other three fabrics, but the fourth. I just wasn't sure what to do with the fourth one.

And then I made this, the Ha'ani Bag (The Day Bag):
Ha'ani Bag

And I love it!

It's got a zipper top.

And three interior pockets.

It measures about 16" across the top, 12.25" from top to bottom, and it's about 4" deep. The handles are 15" from the middle of the handles to the top of the bag.

Just throw in your stuff and go!

Ouch!

See that pretty girl? She hurt her arm the other day.
Arm Sling

So, naturally, being the great auntie that I am, I sewed her up a sling last night. I didn't know what I was doing. I consulted my husband, cut up some fabric, and sewed her a sling. The only tricky thing is that I was sewing for a little girl who was asleep. In another house. And so since I had no measurements, I needed to make something adjustable.

Arm Sling

If you know how to sew bags, you will probably be able to figure out my simple drawing below:
Arm Sling

I forgot to draw the bias tape that I used to bind the cuff. If anyone is interested, I might make a tutorial in the future. There are a few things I would do a little differently if I had to make this again, but overall I am happy with it. And so is my niece. And that's really all that matters.
